Intercultural Competence Designated Courses

This section will be updated every semester to access the courses or high impact practices that have an IC designation. Advisors will also have access to this information.


Introduction to intercultural competence

Students begin the development of their intercultural competence according to two possible paths: by enrolling in COAD 1000 or completing one course at the 1000 level that carries the IC designation.

In COAD 1000, the first-year seminar, students will begin building their Intercultural Portfolio in a module specifically designed for this purpose. In the module the students will:

  • Receive formal introduction to intercultural competence
  • Complete of Intercultural Development Inventory and results from their individual debriefing
  • Participate in hands-on activities
  • Submit their individual Intercultural Development Plan

Students who successfully complete all activities will be eligible to receive badge 1: IC Introduction.

If students do not enroll in the first-year seminar or come to the university with previous academic credit, they will begin their intercultural competence development by enrolling in a 1000 IC designated course.


Completion Certifications

As their academic career advances, students can receive completion certifications that mark their growth of intercultural competence. The successful completion of appropriate designated IC courses and high impact practices  Students will learn how to discuss their intercultural knowledge when applying for jobs and graduate studies.
