For Faculty & Staff
Teaching interculturally does not happen by accident. The QEP will promote and support university teaching that leads to meaningful achievement of intercultural competence in our students.
Intercultural Summer Institute
The yearly Intercultural Summer Institute is an intensive program during which faculty will prepare materials to design or redesign a select course or a High-Impact practice (International Virtual Exchange, Study Abroad, Community Engaged Learning and Undergraduate Research) from an intercultural competence framework. Calls for participation in the institute will be issued early every Spring semester. In addition to the Quality Administrator License (a value of $1,750), the learning opportunities and the support described above, participants who submit their project by the June 30th deadline will receive a for a $1,500 stipend.
The Intercultural Summer Institute activities will occur in three stages, and participants will be expected to complete each stage. At the time of submitting their application, candidates will be asked to describe the project that they would like to develop during the program and their rationale for selecting that specific project.
Stage 1: Initial Preparation
During Spring semester, participants will:
- Complete the Qualified Administrator Seminar offered by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) (PDF) at the timeframe that is convenient for the participant. Registration to the seminar will be paid by ECU.
- Make existing versions of materials related to the project available to the QEP Director by early April.
Stage 2: Intercultural Competence Retreat
Participants will engage on campus from 8:00 – 5:00 each day during a week-long retreat. During the retreat, participants will:
- Attend a Keynote Presentation
- Work in small groups in the development of a common intercultural framework for all projects.
- Meet individually with experts to discuss their projects.
- Learn how their projects are part of ECU’s Quality Enhancement Plan.
- Train to use technology appropriate for their projects.
- Attend workshops related to their particular projects (course development, IVE, etc.).
- Receive support from a peer mentor.
Blocks of time for participants to work on their projects will also be scheduled during this week.
Stage 3: Completion of Project
All participants in the program are expected to complete and submit their project for review and feedback by June 30, 2023. The project must be implemented by the next Academic Year. In addition to the Quality Administrator License (a value of $1,750), the learning opportunities and the support described above, participants who submit their project by the June 30th deadline will receive a $1,500 stipend.
Intercultural Competence Fellowship Program
Faculty and staff who have completed the summer institute, have delivered high quality intercultural competence courses or high impact practices, and have demonstrated their commitment to professional growth in the area of intercultural competence will be eligible to be considered for the role of Intercultural Competence Fellows. Beginning in Academic Year 2023-2024, the QEP will support 4 fellows per year.
The fellows’ responsibilities will be as follows:
- Lead sessions during the summer institutes and through the OFE during the academic year
- Disseminate their intercultural competence projects to other faculty on campus.
- Assist faculty and staff during the design and implementation of their projects
- Provide a peer project evaluation for emerging projects
- Assist the QEP co-directors on initiatives related to the QEP as needed
